Think again before submitting to social bookmarks.

I spend at least 20 minutes a day to submit some of my blog posts to social bookmarking sites in the hope of getting back links. And I have spent countless hours to compile a big list of social bookmarking sites and spent equal number of hours to register in them.

Chris Lang just stopped me from having false hopes of getting back links by submitting to social media sites.

I have initiated a thread, "How many social sites follow links" in the social authority forum and Chris Lang has replied in great detail about what is the Google's strategy in ranking your site, how we may be considered as a spammer by submitting to popular social bookmarking sites including Digg.

We all should read his e-book on social marketing that contains totally different but very useful information.

I feel the same way. I have spent so many wasted hours doing things to help with my back links and my page rank and sometimes I swear it just hurts it or does nothing at all for it.

Malathy,

Thanks for the good words on my eBook but I think many of you have given up on social bookmarking because you are doing it wrong.

My ex wife used to tell me "If you did it right it would work allot better" but that is another story even though it applies here.

Myfavorite social marketing strategy is to use social bookmarking sites to create backlinks to your site.

I have found 15 sites so far that Google will follow back to your site and return a backlink in Google results.

However, think about this: If Digg has 5 million users and the average number of posts, from the Digg top 100 to the user who no longer participates is 1 post per day, that is 5 million posts.

How can you possibly expect that Google will see your 1 link in Digg in 5 million others as a backlink to your site. In fact if you submit your site to Digg and no one else Diggs it, I have come to feel that is a negative indicator in Google’s eyes. The worst thing you can do is submit your Digg posts yourself and then get no Diggs.

One of my friends on Social Marketing Central wrote an article that went hot on the Internet. He got like 1500 visitors in a few days and 80 comments. The bad news is that he only got 18 Diggs. Now tell me this: Don’t you think that Google, that has access to the popularity of posts on Digg just like we do, would not see 1500 visitors and 18 Diggs a negative indicator of this blog and the blog post itself?

I can easily get 100 to 200 Diggs for any article I want in Digg in 2 days. I do that through my own strategies and participation.

So social bookmarking if done wrong can actually hurt you. Social marketing is about being social, so be social on social bookmarking sites, don’t just submit you own content and expect that this will bring you results.

Malathy,

I am going to do a test for you, I am going to get you ranked #1 under "how to get more diggs".

It will take 20 minutes of my time.

I think too many of you have used social bookmarking sites the wrong way and have given up, just like I did on my ex wife, LOL.

It is amazing how much time we can spend networking to improve our page views and our friend's page views. It is such a long process. I appreciate any article that I find that can show me how to spend my limited amount of time more wisely.
I agree that Chris Lang is definitely someone to follow.

Hi Chris,
That must be a real test. This post is getting some comments from those who have been trying to understand social bookmarking. I wonder what is in store for us in your e-book.

Hi Chris and Malathy,

This post is indeed quite interesting. If think naturally when people start blogging, they are eager to be read, and a lot of people try to do exactly what you mentioned in your post (I did :P). I'll make a small post pointing to yours if you don't mind.

One thing maybe Chris, although your book seems great, the design of the page is real Ugly :P Make me think of though pages those spam pages that promise to make you rich while doing nothing ^^.

Anyway Good job.

Gee, I couldn't get you ranked under a term that has traffic because you did not target one but I got you 45 Diggs as of 4:57 AZ time and I have not even started yet. I bet this is the most Diggs you ever got? How can you say social bookmarking is a waste of time?

Hello Malathy,

I read and enjoyed your post, however I kind of wished you would have put the phrase How To Get More Diggs into the first line or two of your message body. The reason for this is due to athe fact that your article pertains to this seemingly burning issue which one can find on almost any social marketing site. Getting more Diggs is a highly searched term in the search engines.

I don't believe in putting my eggs all in one basket, by that I mean that I don't look at Digg, or another social book marking site, and tell myself "Gee, if I post my stuff on this one site then I am going to get hundreds of Diggs and that will raise the popularity of my site!". This is why I get a smile out of the Digg Phenomena for it seems that many people have the tendency to think that way.

Chris Lang offers a lot of free advice on things, but since he is an internet marketer and a business man - he obviously can't divulge all of his information. I think many people out there understand that concept, but some don't.

This new study by Chris is a great idea and I am in full support of it. I'm sure he'll explain this all to you later, but trust me this isn't going to be a walk in the park. In the end it will simply be more proof that his methods work, if they are done properly.

Good Article, Malathy, I wish you luck.

Thank you John for your feedback and wishes.

You have an interesting concept on your website intended for your country men.

Reg Digg, I have my reservations. It seems everybody is interested in using DIGG to get more more diggs but how many of us are really using Digg as a source for information and knowledge?

Hi Chris,
You are amazing. I see '99' is the score at present.
Man,how did you manage it? Is that explained in your e-book?

Thank you Chris. I hope many people are aware of your hard work.

Malathy,

Yes, that is what my book is about, how to get more votes (Diggs) on Social sites.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY: My book is about how to do it properly and not just go around spamming social bookmarking sites to get links.

You can be a Digg spammer, get allot of votes and Google will see this, I have proved that.

How to set up your Blog, and your social site submissions so that the proper keywords are found in the proper places.

This leads to better search engine rankings and better traffic to your blog.

The worst thing you did on this post is not researching your keywords first. If you had keywords in the title that I could have worked with I could have got you ranked under a decent term.

I did well for winging it and on my page you can see that we had you ranked at #4 yesterday morning.

How to get more Diggs

Also Malathy, the book is half price for SMCers, until Tuesday morning. Unless you already bought it from an email address I did not recoginze???

Hello Malathy, and congratulations!

I see you were ranked number 4 on web search yesterday, and I have a screen shot of you ranked number 7 on Blog Search today. Sorry you didn't hold on Web Search, but it's hard to get blogs ranked on Web Search for very long and How To Get More Diggs is sometimes tough to get ranked under.

I was skeptical about getting you ranked as Chris wanted to get you ranked because you didn't use How To Get More Diggs anywhere in your Title or Content and probably in your Keywords. I figured that even Blog Search would be tough. However what Chris set out to do was basically accomplished. I am anxiously awaiting to see how this develops over the next 48 hours.

I've seen things like this Digg Phenomena before on the net. Ever since people found out they could use the computer to interact with others, it ended up with a new rage about every 2 to 4 years. First there was the Net rage, where everyone had to tie their BBS's into a network. Then there was the Internet Rage, where everyone had to be on the internet. Then there was the AIM rage, which quickly turned into the ICQ Rage. Then around 1998/1999 came the Firetalk rage that was not only supposed to change the face of internet chat, but also change the ways that people did business. Then there were various small rages over message board systems and how they operated. Finally we got to the Digg Rage where Digg became the answer to our prayers.. at least to the way of thinking of some. Who knows, next year might be the SoMark rage where the whole way of conducting Internet Marketing and Social Marketing on the net is changed. Some of these rages did end up in success, others drifted off into obscurity, but none of them became the end all, be all thing that they were built up to be.

Digg is a tool, it can be useful, but Digg is not living up to it's potential... not in my estimation. In fact it's sliding down into the category of being just another posting site.

Hi,
Thanks Random Magic. It seems I have to follow you also in the blogosphere to keep my internet marketing learning active.

The reason I didn't write about "How to get more Diggs" is sheer ignorance, an urgency to make people aware of Chris Lang.

I have echoed your views on Digg several times in other blog posts and forums.

But what Chris did is amazing. I salute his skill and knowledge.

I have to save money now to buy his e-book.

Well it's 11:10 AM on Monday the 16th of June and this blog was ranked number 4 for approximately 20 minutes now, that I have seen. This is somewhat important because Google should have re-indexed around 11 AM sometime. Congrats!

What Chris has done was a real tribute to his advice having merit, whether people wish to recognize it or not. Now let's hope you either stay at number 4 on web search or go up in rankings.

Rangan Badri said...

Thanks John, the number is 3 now.
The time now in India is 17th June 7.48 AM.

Chris-I can never forget him.

Malathy,
You are still number 4! If it works for one keyword will it work for more? You have to have what people are interested in and now you have to have the right group of friends it seems.
This is all great and still can be a bit confusing, too.
What is next? Where do you go from here? How do you use this to your advantage? These are some of the questions this study opens up.

I am rereading the book! This is my 3rd reread. There is just so much in there. This is one ebook you read and you can actually use what you read.

You're welcome, Chris, it is now the 18th of June at 10:07 AM our time (PS - USA) and Mala's blog article is number 4 on Web Search and number 10 on Blog Search. I think it's fairly well stabilized and it's position now is dependent upon how well other entries

Rocque asks a good question, "Where does Mala go from here?".

She now has seen where certain tactics work, she may not understand it all - but that will come. Now is the time to apply this to her Social Marketing interests.

Rangan Badri said...

I am at a loss of words. "Where do I go from here"?-I don't know, probably tag along Chris, John and all others who have commented! I need to learn a lot.

The best backlink source I have found until now are forums.
The second place goes to Orkut.
I didn´t try Myspace yet.

Social bookmarking is the most effective way of increasing traffic to your site and it is something that you can do yourself.

Its very important to keep yourself updated with social bookmarking websites.

I have used many websites and have always good results.

Article submission is the best way to generate traffic.

It is very cost effective and I think it is quality dependent and that makes it very valuable .

You have people actually liking something you do and then wanting to associate with you other than tricking them to come to your website.

It's true that you can be considered as a spammer, but its also true that this can be a really good way to backlinks if you plan it right.

One should make sure that you don't mass bookmark, and spread it out well.
